This #MemberCarMonday, we’re featuring Cade Woot This #MemberCarMonday, we’re featuring Cade Wooten and his ‘96 Starlet. Here’s what Cade had to say about his car: “I drive a 1996 Toyota Starlet, a right hand drive JDM hatchback. I have dubbed it “The Goober”. My parents bought it for me (after some convincing) as my first car back in October of 2023. The guy we got it from had already imported the car to the states, so we didn’t have any issues registering it. I had always been fascinated with weird cars that went unnoticed, so when my mom sent me this on Marketplace I instantly wanted it. The car runs incredibly well for being as old as it is. When purchased, it had the equivalent of 18k miles on the odometer. For a 90s Toyota that is essentially brand new. Most of the things I have done to it have been basic maintenance. So far I have changed the oil twice, gotten an alignment, and rotated the tires a couple of times. The only aesthetic mod on the car is the hubcaps. The original hubcaps were cracked and broken, so I found OEM caps from a 1993 Toyots Tercel to keep that period correct look. I plan on keeping it as long as it runs, which will likely be a while considering the mileage. I also plan on keeping it stock the entire time, as I like feeling like I am driving a time capsule. All in all I love this car. Please buy weird little JDM cars. Here are some other fun facts about The Goober: - 75hp 1.3L I4 with a 3 speed auto (yes 3) - No tachometer only loud engine sounds - It gets 40mpg unless you take it on the interstate - The indicators and wipers are flipped so if I drive any normal car I always turn on the wipers by accident - It has a reverse beep - Only one airbag in the steering wheel - Japan didn’t require 3rd brake lights in the 90s so it doesn’t have one - People often double take because they don’t realize I’m on the wrong side at first.”
