After a short break, we’re back with another Member Car Monday! This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Bradley Smith and his beloved Miata.
Bradley’s journey with his Miata has been nothing short of exciting. Here’s a bit of a deeper dive into his story! “Ever since I knew what a sports car was, I've been itching to have my own and take to track days and autocross events. I had been looking at cheap, older cars on and off since high school, but Covid-era pricing forced me to wait. Finally, after my sophomore year of college, my dad and I picked up this 1992 Mazda Miata. It was completely stock with over 225k miles, and it even came with a hard top! Now, a year and a half later, it's sitting on coilovers and other upgraded suspension components, has new wheels and tires, and a Hard Dog roll bar for safety. I've had the opportunity to take it to AMP with Wreck Racing and have done a couple of airport days with it now, and it puts up some incredible times. Every drive is fun and exciting, and really does go to show that a Miata Is Always The Answer.”

#membercarmonday Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Joshua Dacosta and his impressive journey with cars. Joshua has been able to work on both our retired car, the 818zx, and our current Conquest TS4. His dedication and skill have not only strengthened the team but also translated into the progress of his personal project car. Here’s a closer look at Joshua’s car and the story behind it. “This car was a surprise gift from my parents for my high school graduation. It’s a 2005 Acura RL. When I first saw it at home, I was initially disappointed because I had never seen one before and didn’t know what I was looking at. I decided to research what the car was and discovered some interesting details about its history and development. Before I could start driving it, I had to perform some maintenance—specifically, replacing the timing belt and water pump. From that job, I learned so much about the platform and began to truly appreciate it.
The car runs exceptionally well for having over 200k miles, with that last 40k added by me. It is more than adequate for road trips although passengers may say otherwise. Since I started driving it, I haven’t experienced any major maintenance issues nor has it ever left me stranded. I had the opportunity to take it to Airport Day last November where I learned that luxury boats are not set up for cornering even with its powerful all-wheel drive setup.
Most of the modifications I’ve made to the car are focused on creature comfort and aesthetics. The key changes include the addition of factory-integrated Bluetooth (since the navigation and climate controls share the same screen, making an aftermarket setup difficult), a lightweight-crank pulley (deleting the harmonic balancer for more responsive engine speed), cold-air intake, additional ground wires, wheels and tires. I do plan on keeping the car for a while and working on it to improve drivability. My current goal is to get coilovers as an alternative to my worn out shocks. Overall I really enjoy driving the car and all the cool tech it includes adds to the experience all the more.”

#membercarmonday This week’s Member Car Monday features a newer member who’s already making a big impact: Joseph Bamert and his incredible 1989 Porsche 944 S2. Here’s what Joseph had to say about his car:
“ This is my 1989 Porsche 944 S2. (The S2 is the cool version; 16 valve DOHC 3L inline-4) I bought it as my first project car 2 years ago through FB marketplace and since owning it I’ve done mostly maintenance including: rod bearings, lots of fluid leaks, rear axle rebuilds, chain tensioner replacement, and some other small things.
It has a race interior with a Momo bucket seat, Momo Prototipo, 6-point racing harness and a KLA harness bar. Gears are shifted through a Only944 short shifter and shift linkage. It is sat on Staggered OZ racing wheels wrapped in some Chinese tires. The power steering rack was removed because all it did was leak and has since been replaced with a manual variant. My favorite “mod” might be the custom plate though.“

#membercarmonday This week’s Member Car Monday goes out to one of our Drivetrain Integration leads, Krishna Reddy. His Corvette has seen many adventures and is a staple piece at our events. Here’s what he had to say about his car: “I bought this 1996 Corvette almost a year ago, after having searched for a car I would actually enjoy for the previous 2 years and getting burned by FB sellers multiple times. Since then, I’ve rebuilt the entire suspension, replaced the radiator, clutch and brake hydraulics, rear wheel bearings, etc., designed custom parts in CAD to repair the window regulators and mount a new radio, and generally made more fixes to make the ride more comfortable and the drive even faster. She’s broken down, been fixed, been abused, broken down again, etc., but any gripes I have with this car go away the second I put my foot to the floor and start measuring fuel economy in “smiles per gallon.” She’s driven to Minneapolis and back after getting packed to the brim with suitcases and tools, and come January, will make the 3,000 mile drive from Myrtle Beach to San Francisco and (hopefully) not explode as I use the whole speedometer in the Utah Salt Flats. Shoutout to the car that started it all, though: the $650 junkyard Civic, which has gone through a manual conversion, transmission explosion, interior gutting and un-gutting, has been rear ended, leaked more oil than Deepwater, and still remains kicking to this day.”

#membercarmonday Say hello to Mikko Westerbeke, this week’s Member Car Monday feature! Mikko is our Chassis Lead and has been behind some seriously impressive projects. He’s got a real passion with several projects in the works, here’s a bit about his journey and what he’s working on now. “I began my mechanical career at age 13 through working on bikes, dirt bikes, mopeds, go karts, motorcycles, fours wheelers, and pretty much anything you can find on Facebook marketplace for cheap. This soon escalated into a passion for the more expensive and more frustrating hobby of working on cars. I bought my first car at age 15 which was a 2000 Pontiac Grand am, which I soon sold for a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan. My minivan taught me many lessons on vehicle maintenance and how not to mod a car. These lessons carried over to my third vehicle which was a 2008 Mazda 3 Sport. I went on to perform many mods to try to make it faster and seem nicer than it really was, such as a stage 4 6 puck sprung clutch, performance brakes, CAI, replacing all of the suspension components, lots of engine maintenance, a custom aero kit, and of course wheels and tires. Finally, I have my most recent car which is a 2000 bmw z3 with the m52 inline 6 engine. I have replaced most of the suspension components and tuned the suspension system to simultaneously handle Atlanta roads and be able to track it, done lots of engine maintenance, tires, and many other improvements to make it handle better, look better, and perform better. Also the two bikes shown are a 2007 Kawasaki zx6r and a 1976 Kawasaki kz400 respectively.”

#membercarmonday This week a feature from our current president, Nathan Nichols. He is a classic car lover and has started building quite the collection. “I bought my first car the summer after freshman year, dragging my mom along to a Piggly Wiggly parking lot in LaGrange GA to meet up with a retired airplane mechanic I met off facebook marketplace. It had a real bench seat, vent windows, and a four speed manual - everything I adored about classic American cars in one package. That car (truck) was an all original 1986 Ford F-150 Flareside in two-tone blue and gray. After driving it home, I replaced the plug wires, alternator, & a carb gasket, became an expert on V-belts, added intermittent wipers & a new cigarette lighter, had the fuel float fixed, shampooed the interior, and have daily driven it since then for thousands of miles (and several donuts) with no issues. It’s a rare option combo for this truck, and I’ve already decided to keep it as long as I live, since I know I’d never be able to find one just like it. This past summer I picked up a second car, which continued my classic American enthusiasm with a special twist. It’s a 1978 Ford LTD which was engine swapped to a Mercedes OM617 5-cylinder turbodiesel by Wreck Racing alumni @dnixon123. I drove this car home from Nashville much to my parents’ bewilderment, and have since done very minor work to it, with potentially bigger plans sometime in the near future. For now, it serves as a hilariously comfortable people mover for many a Wreck Racer, both to the shop and to Cookout. It makes loud tractor noises, floats down the road in an indescribably beautiful way, and is a surprisingly fuel efficient road trip beast. In the future I plan to get an 80s manual Japanese sports car and break out of my incidental Ford loyalty.”

#membercarmonday For this week’s Member Car Monday, we’re spotlighting Noah, our lead engineer, and his Honda Prelude. We asked him about how he came to own this gem, and here’s what he shared with us. “I started college knowing nearly nothing about cars except that they looked cool. During my freshman year one of my best friends convinced me to buy a 2001 Honda Prelude Type SH as a first project car. My first project was an entire rear suspension refresh which ended up being way too involved for my first time working on cars, but I had plenty of help from friends, and a very angry Home Owners Association president on my ass to motivate me to finish it. Since then the Prelude has gotten wheels, tires, coilovers, and countless maintinence items to keep it kicking as my dream daily driver for nearly 3 years.”

#membercarmonday Bringing back a Wreck Racing tradition, here is Jose, one of our oldest members with his Miata and E46. Below are details Jose shared with the team about his builds “My car ownership journey started with a 2003 Miata which gave me the awesome opportunity to track Laguna Seca, Sonoma Raceway, Buttonwillow, Thunderhill, and AMP. Getting it track worthy consisted of installing a roll bar, new tires and brakes, exhaust, intake, and fluids. The car handled the abuse like a champ with the only minor set-back being a rear-end collision by a Californian on their phone. Following the sale of the Miata I purchased a zf 5speed 2001 330i which, unbeknownst to me, was originally an automatic. This surprise led me down a painful path of ECU reprogramming and diagnosis in order to pass emissions. After finally being registered, new wheels, tires, and alignment have made it a fun daily with the occasional autocross. Bonus pic for the summer internship Scion tC, completely stock, 4000 miles in 2 months, trooper.”

This past weekend we competed in the Grassroots Mo

This past weekend we competed in the Grassroots Motorsport Magazine $2000 Challenge and brought home a few prizes: 🥈2nd place overall
🥇1st in class
🥇1st in concours
🥉3rd in autocross Our car performed incredibly well in the challenge despite battling issues with engine sensors and broken shift linkages. Our fastest run clocked in at 43.4 seconds, just 1.1 seconds off the fastest time. Our run netted us 3rd in our class and 4th overall. After the racing had subsided, the cars were wheeled into the judging pavilion and every team gave a quick presentation to the judges outlining their build. The judges were impressed with our technical skills required on the build and our in-depth approach to optimizing our setup, awarding us first place out of all 31 vehicles. #wreckracing #georgiatech #motorsport #grassrootsmotorsport #helluvaengineer #togetherweswarm
